Ansley Park Glass House — Modern Renovation & Interior Transformation
The Ansley Park Glass House stands as one of Atlanta’s most striking modern residences—a contemporary structure shaped by steel, glass, and bold architectural lines. BLDGS Architects designed the home in 2008, creating a dramatic contrast to the historic character of Ansley Park. Because of its architectural significance, Brownlow & Sons preserved the front façade; however, the team renovated the back of the home and completely reimagined the interior.
A Contemporary Vision, Preserved and Elevated
Working closely with the original architecture firm, Brownlow & Sons approached the project with respect for the home’s modernist roots. As a result, Brownlow & Sons carefully renovated the rear elevation — a full curtain‑wall system of glass and steel — to maintain its transparency and structural clarity while improving performance and livability.
At the same time, the interior was fully gutted to create warm, functional spaces that balance the dramatic glass exterior. This approach ultimately produced a refined “Yin and Yang” composition: luminous, open rooms paired with intimate, grounded interior environments.
Architectural Features
- Curtain‑Wall Glass Exterior: The back of the home is wrapped in custom glazing, creating a seamless indoor‑outdoor connection.
- Cantilevered & Suspended Rooms: Upper levels appear to float, supported by concealed steel structure.
- Multi‑Level Living: A glass‑lined main floor, a connected kitchen and family space, and a partially covered rooftop deck with an outdoor fireplace.
- Urban Setting: Positioned at the base of Midtown’s 50‑story towers, the home creates a striking dialogue between residential modernism and urban density.
Interior Renovation by Brownlow & Sons
Inside, Brownlow & Sons reimagined every space to enhance comfort, function, and flow. Consequently, the renovation focused on creating a warm, livable environment while honoring the home’s architectural intent.
Key updates include:
- Full interior gut renovation
- Reimagined kitchen with modern cabinetry, improved layout, and updated finishes
- Attic conversion into a kids’ study, bonus room, and bathroom
- Pool and pool house renovation, including new bluestone, fencing, and updated outdoor amenities
Ultimately, every space was rebuilt with clean lines, natural materials, and a focus on light—allowing the glass architecture to remain the star while creating a comfortable, functional home for everyday living.
A Modern Landmark in Ansley Park
Atlanta Magazine, the Modern Tour of Homes, and the Archello Project Guide, have all featured the Glass House. Architects and design publications recognize these homes for their innovative structure and bold use of glass. Additionally, it joins a small collection of modernist homes in Ansley Park, including:
- A 1986 Bauhaus‑inspired residence with a three‑story atrium and glass roof
- A granite‑and‑limestone modern home by TaC Studios overlooking Winn Park
Together, these homes represent a rare architectural thread woven through one of Atlanta’s most historic neighborhoods.
