In a recent blog, we shared three scenarios commonly experienced by homeowners who want to avoid the stress of selling and moving, but know they need to do some home remodeling.
1. You have been in your home for years and it needs renovating.
2. Your family no longer fits in your home and it needs renovating.
3. You plan to age in place in your home and it needs renovating.
No matter which of these scenarios fit with your circumstances, here are three tips to help you decide on your home remodeling plans for the right reasons.
Make sure it’s the right time
It looks like 2019 will be a favorable time to plan an upgrade to your home or complete a remodeling project. Why? Because your home is likely one of your best investments and there’s no need to take on the stress of selling your home given the 2019 predictions.
According to the experts, Metro Atlanta home sales prices are predicted to continue its current upward trend, but with less of an increase in 2019. The median number of days to sell a home is trending longer. Mortgage interest rates are predicted to increase and the inventory of homes may also increase – both 2019 predictions indicate a shift from a sellers’ to a buyers’ market. 1
Next, there are seasonal times when you can save money prior to product model year ends and during the end of the year starting in November.
And, be certain that you and your family are prepared for a temporary inconvenience. We encourage our clients to plan their projects during extended vacations and around major family events like weddings.
Avoid being too trendy
While the “dream” kitchen or bathroom you found in a magazine is stunning, it may not be the right style for your home or the greater Metro Atlanta area. If it’s too unique or quirky, then your cost to value may suffer. There is a wide variety of styles and colors that are trendy, but still timeless. A balanced decision preserves long term value and appeal. You can personalize your remodeled room with accents or accessories.
Be eco-friendly
While you’re updating and replacing appliances, fittings, fixtures and possibly even your windows, save on your utility costs by choosing items that are energy efficient. There are many eco-friendly options of windows, kitchen appliances, hot water heaters and toilets. And, if it’s feasible, donate old cabinets and materials to reuse centers like your local Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
